The bottom area inside the foot ring of an LPG cylinder is both the most vulnerable and the hardest to inspect—prone to humidity, impact damage, corrosion, and dirt accumulation. Inspection is difficult, often requiring the cylinder to be inverted or viewed with mirrors or cameras. To address this, HTPC, in collaboration with MAKEEN Energy, developed a high-speed automated inspection system. The system uses a camera positioned beneath a chain conveyor to scan the cylinder bottom as it moves overhead. A PLC and PC-based software analyse the images to detect damage. Cylinders identified as defective are automatically sorted out by a pusher, ensuring efficient, accurate inspection and improved safety standards.

A project was conducted to achieve near-diesel efficiency in heavy-duty on-road LPG engines, using the Cummins 15-litre engine with a baseline diesel brake thermal efficiency (BTE) of 44%. The research employed a multi-faceted strategy, including stoichiometric combustion with high exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), partial end gas auto-ignition (EGAI), direct and port fuel injection, and a non-fuelled prechamber spark plug. Various piston designs with different compression ratios were tested on a Cummins X15 2.5-litre single-cylinder engine. The direct injection setup achieved a BTE of 43.9% using a high-squish 14:1 compression ratio piston, prechamber ignition, and 29% EGR. An optimised port fuel injection configuration achieved a comparable BTE of 43.8%, demonstrating that LPG engines can approach diesel-like efficiency through advanced combustion and engine design strategies.

Open innovation initiative focused on operational safety. The project's goal is to reduce accidents during the loading and unloading of P13 gas cylinders at filling stations. Following a structured scouting process, two Startups with different technologies solutions were selected: Dersalis, using wearable sensors to monitor physiological conditions and fatigue, and Stepps, using AI-based video analytics to identify unsafe actions. Both solutions will be tested in real-world scenarios, emphasizing proactive risk prevention. This project presents an AI-powered system that automates the counting of LPG cylinders on trucks at filling facilities, replacing manual inspections. Utilizing real-time image processing with the YOLO v10 algorithm, it achieves an overall accuracy of 80–85%, which rises to 90–99% when trucks carry only one or two cylinder types. The system can detect 13 cylinder types (2 kg to 45 kg) and adapt to diverse loading configurations. It also identifies truck types and license plates upon entering the inspection zone. By employing advanced object detection, the solution significantly improves operational efficiency, safety, and data-driven process optimisation.

MAKEEN has developed a small Ex-i approved pressure sensor/ transmitter (ST). Although suitable for other applications, in this application, the ST is used the to detect unsuccesful FH engagement. 

System description:

The ST is installed as a part of an automatic Filling Head (FH) for LPG valves. The ST is connected to an Ex-i digital controller (MUC) which is also powering the ST. The MUC controls all digital in/outputs of the electronic filling scale (e.g. digital load cell, solenoid valves, photo cells)

The Functional description:

The LPG cylinder is introduced to the carrousel filling machine

After receiving tare weight instruction, registering residual LPG and calculating the net amount LPG to be filled, the FH connects to the cylinder valve

In case the FH is not correctly conncted and LPG is escaping, the ST will register the slightest pressure increase and the machine will immediately disconnect the FH.
